The MonWHO 2012 Conference will take place in Montreal at New Residence Hall, over the weekend of Friday March 23, Saturday March 24 and Sunday March 25, 2012.

The theme is Refugee Health.

In addition to the regional block and plenary debating sessions, the MonWHO Secretariat is proud to provide delegates with a variety of educational and social opportunities throughout the conference weekend. Below you will find detailed information on the speakers and workshops and social events planned for this year’s conference.

Keynote Speakers


This year, we are honoured to have two very distinguished Keynote speakers address the delegates, Dr Cleveland and Dr Liu.

Dr. Janet Cleveland who will be covering the mental health consequences of the detention of refugees.

Dr. Cleveland is a psychologist, legal scholar and anthropologist who studies various aspects of the refugee status determination process in Canada, the psychologically vulnerability of persons, and the detention of asylum seekers. She is a research associate at the Canada Research Chair on International Migration Law at Université de Montréal, and has focused her research on the problems faced by asylum seekers and refugees since 2003.

Dr. Joanne Liu will speak about the challenges involved in the initial setup of refugee camps and managing an influx of population in a new country in terms of health screening, health prevention measures, basic packages to offer, and health issues related to security.

Dr. Liu is an expert in the case management of new arrivals in refugee camps in a state of emergency, with her most recent experience being her work in the Somalian camps in Kenya. She has worked with Médecins Sans Frontières for 15 years, and was its president for 5. She currently teaches paediatrics at Université de Montréal. She recently won the Women’s Merit Award from the Y Foundation.

Panelist Speakers


Speakers on the panel include experts in the field of refugee health as well as global health in general. The MonWHO Executive typically poses a question of debate to the panel that touches upon various important issues related to Refugee Health

Delegates will have a choice of workshops to attend which address different topics of the conference’s theme, Refugee Health.
