Dr. Gina Tambini, currently PAHO area manager for Family and Community Health and manager of five technical units (Latin American Center for Perinatology, Women and Reproductive Health in Uruguay and the Caribbean Food and Nutrition Institute in Jamaica), has long been involved with infectious diseases and indigenous health. Between 1999 to 2002, she served as coordinator of PAHO’s Expanded Program on Immunization, a program that helped bring measels levels down to a record low in 2001 in the Americas. When asked what she finds the most important aspects of PAHO, Dr. Tambini responded, “Advocating for health as a human right, striving to reduce inequities, and responding to country needs.” Dr. Tambini has also worked in Apache and Navajo communities in Arizona and as well as with indigenous communities in the amazon as well as having numerous publications on epidemiology and infectious diseases.
